چکیده

The primary goal of air traffic control (ATC) is safety of the flights under the controller's responsibility (Mensen 1989, pp. 3-25; Eurocontrol 1999). Such safety requires reliable detection and effective resolution of impending intersections of aircraft trajectories, which are termed ‘conflicts’ if aircraft do not remain separated for at least 5 nautical miles laterally (Mensen 1989) and for 1000 feet vertically (Eurocontrol 1998, Mensen 1989). While conflict detection has been repeatedly subjected to research and succeeds in Middle Europe practically without devastating errors, very little is known about the controller’s reasons of choosing specific conflict resolutions. This situation characterises also the development of technical systems for conflict detection, and for conflict resolution: Several tools for conflict detection have been described, but there seems to exist no technical system for the support of conflict resolution that works in a controller compatible way. All known resolution

A Near-term Concept for Trajectory-based Operations with Air/ground Data Link Communication

An operating concept and required system components for trajectory-based operations with air/ground data link for today’s en route and transition airspace is proposed. Controllers are fully responsible for separation as they are today, and no new aircraft equipage is required. Trajectory automation computes integrated solutions to problems like metering, weather avoidance, traffic conflicts and...

Pilot Acceptance, Compliance, and Performance with an Airborne Conflict Management Toolset

A human-in-the-loop experiment was conducted at the NASA Ames and Langley Research Centers, investigating the En Route Free Maneuvering component of a future air traffic management concept termed Distributed Air/Ground Traffic Management (DAG-TM). NASA Langley test subject pilots used the Autonomous Operations Planner (AOP) airborne toolset to detect and resolve traffic conflicts, interacting w...

Case-Based Reasoning for Flight Conflicts Resolution in En-Route Short Term Conflict Alert Situation

This paper introduces a knowledge-driven approach for solving short range conflicts in En-route STCA situation in order to assist the air traffic controller to handle emergency and ensure the safety. In stead of applying classic conflict resolution approach, case-based reasoning theory and technology is used to transfer the controllers’ knowledge and experience to automate conflict resolution. ...

Performance Metrics for Tactical Aircraft to Aircraft Conflicts

An air traffic control system’s main function is to separate aircraft. The computer supporting the system assists the air traffic controllers by generating a conflict alert whenever it predicts that two aircraft are about to get too close to each other. The performance of the conflict alert function is a key element to the overall functioning of the air traffic control system. A set of metrics ...

Automated Conflict Resolution for Air Traffic Control

This paper describes a conflict resolution algorithm that can provide automated separation assurance for the next generation air traffic control system. The algorithm generates resolution trajectories that can be sent to the aircraft from a ground-based system via data link. With suitable reconfiguration the algorithm can also be installed on board aircraft to support airborne separation assura...
